Legal Question in Criminal Law in Massachusetts

billing question

i hired a lawyer in a criminal case, he brought in another lawyer. My contract was with one lawyer will call ted. i paid ted all invoices sent to me by him. Now one year later, ted sends me a letter telling me to remit payment to lawyer he brought into case. Am i resposible for this. I thought my bill was paid.

It sounds a bit odd to me, but I think you need to talk to "Ted" directly about this. Presumably, Ted's position is that at some point early in the proceedings, everything was spelled out, so that you knew who was working for you, you knew what the billing arrangement was supposed to be, and you agreed (either openly or tacitly) to all of this. If that is not your understanding, then Ted needs to explain to you how and when you agreed to pay two lawyers for this matter, and what the arrangement was that you agreed to.
