Legal Question in Criminal Law in Massachusetts
My boyfriend has been charged with felony theft by his former employer. He admitted that he was guilty to the police. He was arraigned and a court date was set. He had planned to represent himself since we cannot find a lawyer that we can afford. A public defender was not an option because he was working but has since been fired when his new employer find out.
Is he eligible for a public defender now? Does he wait until the court date to ask for one? Or, since he admitted guilt, would the prosecutors be willing to work with him without jail. He has no prior record.

Representing himself on a larceny case is ill advised and potentially dangerous. he should seek counsel as soon as possible.
