Re: Criminal matter
When you go to court, go directly to the Probation Department, where they will interview you. Inform them that you cannot afford an attorney and that you would like court appointed counsel. If the Massachusetts Legislature hasn't yet veoted that line item, they will appoint a lawyer, assuming that you qualify.
Re: Criminal matter
If the crime charged qualifies, and you are also deemed qualified financially, the court will appoint a public defender to represent you, subject to a small fee $150 or perhaps a little more. The court will give you time to make the payments.
Re: Criminal matter
If you cannot afford an attorney, you will advise the probation department. The intake includes financial information. Depending on the charge, the judge may appoint an attorney.
