Legal Question in Criminal Law in Massachusetts

I am trying to decide on which of two lawyers to retain for a criminal case. The difference between the two is: The first lawyer will travel two hours to get to the courthouse and is charging $3500.The second lawyer is familiar with the judges and is known in that court (he is $1000 more than the second one). This is for a drug trafficking charge. Does it make a difference if the lawyer knows the people at that court?

Generally, and I cannot say based on the information you provided who you should hire, you want a lawyer who is familiar with the Court where the case will be tried. All other factors being equal, that is who I would choose.

Like Attorney Jacobson, I don't know which lawyer you should hire from the brief synopsis you provided. And while I agree that I would give an edge to the lawyer who is familiar with that specific court IF everything else is equal, I do not think that familiarity with the court is the most important consideration. Every lawyer has his/her own specific skill set; they may also approach cases differently; and they may get different outcomes as a result of their individual skills and approaches. Personally, I would concentrate on those considerations first, before factoring in which attorney is more familiar with that court. Good luck.
