Legal Question in Criminal Law in Massachusetts

Defendant violatated a 209 A by calling P;laintiff and leaving messages.....Plaintiff took his phone to the police. While the police listened to the messages a complaint was taken ouit...A warrant was issued against the defendant. However the local detective wanted to speak with the plaintiff about the complaint. I never heard of this. Can you explain?
