Legal Question in Criminal Law in Massachusetts
Family/ Harasment
a friend of mine living in mass has a 16 yr old daughter that was visiting her grandmother in Maine last year and refused to come home. They listed her as a runaway but when the athorities went to the house the grand parents refused entry and the girl ran outthe back door. There has not been any abuse it is basically a case of greener grass. My friend has come to terms and is allowing the girl to stay. However the family in maine continues to harrass them in mass by posting obsenities on webpages and pointless phone calls to say hurtfull things. They have tried to ignore anything that doesnt pertain to the wellbeing of the 16yr old. But today a letter addressed to her younger 12yr old daughter was recived. It was a very vulgar letter demeaning the parents and other grandmother. Im talking really offensive slander. Including telling the little girl that she and her little brother were going to end up in an orphanage. What can they do about this?

Re: Family/ Harasment
Your Subject says it all. The MA family should go to the local police with evidence of the harrassment, i.e. the letter, recorded messages, printouts of the internet postings, etc. The local police should be able to bring a harrassment charge against them. If they do not respond, go to the local district court and speak with a victim advocate or the assistant district attorney. If the postings and letters do in fact rise to the level of harrassment, which it certainly sounds like they do, either of those two entities will bring the necessary criminal charges.
