Legal Question in Criminal Law in Massachusetts

Firearms permit appeal process

I have had a class ''A'' license to carry firearms for 3 years, and recently had to apply to renew the permit. I applied as I had done initially 3 years ago, but the application was denied. Per order of the letter, I immediately surrendered all firearms and ammunition which I own. However, I am entitled to appeal the decision but must to so in district court. What are my options? I only have 90 days to appeal the decision and do not know to whom I should speak about the issue; and most imporantly how I can get back my permit. Any suggestions? Does anyone practice in this area specifically?

Re: Firearms permit appeal process

I would need to know more about the situation as to why they did not renew your license before I could advise you as to what you should do. I would suggest using an attorney who is familiar with the players in the specific District Court where the appeal would occur. In what town are you located? Please feel free to give me a call at 617-835-8733 if you would like to discuss the matter further. Martha Kovner

Assuming you would be filing your appeal in the Plymouth District Court where I practiced before moving to East Bridgewater and there is no compelling reason to deny you a permit, you would be well advised to retain an attorney familiar with that Court to prepare and present your appeal. Good Luck!
