Legal Question in Criminal Law in Massachusetts

I found disturbing evidence that my 46 year-old fiance (living in Boston) was involved with his 16 year-old female student who lives in Chicago. I found text messaging conversations in his iphone back-ups by logging in his Mac (I happened to guess the password right.) Is this considered breaking in? Did I violate any privacy laws? Before reporting this crime, I would like to make sure I did not break any laws. We were living together at the time, and his Mac happened to be laying around the apartment.

Thank you for your help.
