Legal Question in Criminal Law in Massachusetts

My friend has a restraining order put out on him by his old roommate. He recently got out of jail and managed to hack into his email accounts and sent messages to himself threatening him (making it look like my friend is the one who sent them and made it look like he violated the restraining order) The police arrested my friend for violation which is completely a lie cause this person hacked into his email accounts to make it look like it was him . he now has a court date coming up in November and he never contacted this guy ever. He didn't even know he was out of jail. What can my friend do? He went to the police and they said they can't do anything. Now he may face jail time for violating this order and he did nothing wrong. He has been staying with me and I was with him the whole time and not once did he try to contact this person. What can he do now. ?

How do you know that this person hacked into his own e-mail account, and how can you prove it? That would seem to be one of the key issues that your friend could use to establish his innocence.
