Legal Question in Criminal Law in Massachusetts
Hello,
As a bit of background, I am 19 years old, never shoplifted before in my lifetime, and have no criminal record whatsoever.Today, however, in an uncharacteristic moment, I shoplifted at a local K-Mart and I was caught. I was in a group of 4 people that each took items, totaling around $60, but when the loss prevention officers filled out the paperwork, they tallied up our individual amounts. Mine was about $12. I'm really not concerned about paying the fine or performing community service, I just want to know if there is any way this will ever be removed from my record. I really don't want future opportunities for myself to be compromised by a VERY stupid mistake.
Thanks for any advice you can offer,
David

David you are smart to focus on the long term effects of a criminal record rather than the short term issue which truthfully isn't that harsh. For a first time shoplifting a fine, resititution and probation are the norm on a guilty finding. The problem is the Guilty on your record. Hire a good criminal defense attorney and make sure you explain that you are concerned with your record or CORI (Criminal Offenders Record Information). A good attorney should be able to avoid a conviction for you. If you need assistance call me at (508) 752-7500.
Most records can be sealed or expunged-after years. Your best bet is to work out the plea so that it dosent affect your future-speak with an attorney before you do anything.
