You should not answer questions whether or not you did take the money. If arrested and asked to answer question you have a right to remain silent and have an attorney present during any attempt to question you.

The usual answer is no. However, there may some facts in which there is a different answer. I am a criminal defense attorney, and you can contact me about this.
You should talk to no one, and certainly not post a detailed description on the internet.
The next person you should and must speak to is an attorney to analyze the case, and discuss your options.
If you seek further information or representation, you can call my office.
If you want to provide me with more essential information about the situation, or contact me, then I can provide me with the necessary details, so that I can evaluate what is going on, and give you my thoughts.

Generally speaking, there is nothing good that can come from you traveling into a town to speak with a police officer who suspects you of theft, and who can, within his town, arrest you if he wishes to charge you with larceny. Always speak with a lawyer before speaking to the police. Regardless of how honest the police officer may be, he has been told by someone that you are a thief and that is his first impression of you. Basic psychology says that all people take steps to RATIONALIZE their first impressions and often draw whatever conclusions are necessary in order to do it.
