Legal Question in Criminal Law in Massachusetts
Plea Bargain for Shoplifting
Hi, my friend just got arrested for shoplifting and is awaiting her first courtdate. I have read that on here that you can ask for a plea bargain from the Asst. DA resulting in a 90 probational period after which all charges and dropped and records are expunged. However, she was caught with more than 500 dollars of merchandise which I understand is a felony. How are her chances in getting any kind of plea bargain and would it be easier to ask for this yourself or hiring a good lawyer to do it for you?

Lawyers are often able to work out deals for clients that clients are unable to get by themselves. I would highly recommmend that your friend consult with an attorney who specializes in criminal defense and therefore knows the "players" in the system. Hope that this helps. Most judges and lawyers would agree that attempting to represent yourself is like trying to pull out your own tooth with a set of plyers. Shoplifting offenses can have serious consequences, including immigration consequences for non-citizens. If one cannot afford a lawyer, the court will appoint one. If one can afford a lawyer, it is best to consult with an attorney as soon as possible.
