Legal Question in Criminal Law in Massachusetts
Should I seal the charges?
As I posted last night, I was charged with (1) 2 counts of forgery of a notarized document; (2) Filing a false report as a public officer; and (3) being an unlicensed private detective.
The charges were dismissed and/or not prosecuted (nolle prosqui). I am a paralegal and a notary public. I plan on staying in this career field for as long as possible. (I love legal support work!).
Today I went to court and obtained the 'petition to seal' form. The clerk advised me that if it is sealed, future employers may become suspicious of the fact that I will have sealed records on file (on my CORI file).
Would it be better to keep the charges and disposition on my CORI as is? Or should I get them sealed?
Thanks for your opinion.
(Note: Attorney Lebensbaum was kind enough to respond to my question last night and a private email today. Unfortunately, however, I misplaced the email address.)
