Legal Question in Criminal Law in Massachusetts
Statute of Limitation for Domestic Violence
A friend of mine was in an abusive relationship for a while and then got out. Since then, she has been dealing with the medical and psychological effect from it. She would like to know how long she has to file charges since she doesn't feel she could handle that at the moment. Thank You

Re: Statute of Limitation for Domestic Violence
In Massachusetts, the limitations period for criminal offenses generally is 6 years,
see, G. L. c. 277, Section 63.
Your friend may also have a right to be compensated from a state fund administered for victims
of violent crime under G.L.c. 258A. This can include reimbursement for medical expenses. Under
the victim compensation statute, you may have an obligation to report the crime to the police
promptly.
