Legal Question in Criminal Law in Massachusetts
Victim's property
My friend had his apartment broken into by a neighbor. His lcd tv and a small locked safe were stolen. The police obtained a warrant and recovered his property within a couple of hours. When asked what was in the safe my friend told the police it had $2k in it and a $20 bag of weed. I don't know why he told them he had weed, but he did. Now the police want him to come down and open the safe in front of them do they can take inventory, and he refuses. Can they force him to do this? Will he be arrested for the weed when he does open it? Also if there was a little more in the safe than he initially told the detectives what happens then? It had a small ''jewelry'' scale, a couple of prescription pills, and more like $11k in cash. If he opens it in front of them he's worried they will think he is a dealer because of the scale and try to confiscate the money and charge him with a crime. Any advise?

Re: Victim's property
Your friend needs a lawyer NOW and should not open the safe. He was pretty dumb to make any statements and would be even dumber if he goes down to open the safe.
