Warrants

If there is a warrant out for a drug offense (Possession of Marijuana), what should the accused expect when turning themselves into authorities?

Assuming the warrant is in Massachusetts, the answer depends on the following:

1. The particular law you are accused of violating (possession, possession with intent to distribute, in a school zone, ...) They carry very different potential sentences.

2. Your criminal record, in particular how many defaults you have on your record.

3. The details of the crime you are accused of committing.

4. Other factors that relate to the Judge's belief that you will or will not return to the court again when you are scheduled to next appear.

5. Your probation status.

If you work with an attorney, most courts and police departments will permit the attorney to arrange to have you appear in court, and they will not pick you up and take you there and hold you in a locked cell.
