Administering the Breathalyzer

Does a State Police officer need to be certified to operate a breathalyzer machine in Massachussetts? If so, what are the requirements, and how long does it take for an Officer to become qualified to operate the breathalyzer machine?

Yes Certification under Code of Mass, Regulation 501 usually must be renewed every 1-2 years.

Yes--all police officers have to be certified to operate the breathalyzer in MA. The requirements can be found in the Code of Massachusetts Regulations (501 CMR). Martha Kovner
