Without a marriage, your legal status is at best contractual. I have no idea about your reference to the guardianship, why it was done, for who, and for what reason.

The Guradian's obligation is to the ward. However, you do have the right to seek to be the guardian of your significant other as opposed to the temporary guardian.

The court can decide if that is who should be the guardian. Your durable power of attorney should be somewhat persuasive as to the court.

I would contact an attorney in your area and have him review the status of the case.
