Legal Question in Family Law in Massachusetts
what does accredited college mean
Child support states attending 12 credit hours of an accredited college. What does that mean in terms of classes attending. There are 4 classes being attended, all for clothing design, 2 classroom and 2 internet. 8 hours of actual classroom time a week. Does this cover the terms for continued support?
Thank you
Matt

Re: what does accredited college mean
First of all credit and accredited are two different things. Credit i.e. one course may be 2 credits, another may be 4 credits, it all depends on whether they are taking electives or mandatory courses for a specific degree such as "criminal justice" ect.
Accredited means that the state recognizes that school as following a certain set-standard that they must follow to be recognized by the state as accredited. If not, they are not an accredited school.
Secondly, you can find out whether or not a school is accredited by doing research for that particular college, etc. Colleges also have brochures that are free to the public that shows credits that will be earned for certain classes attended.
Lastly, in order to state whether or not, the order is being followed, it would have to be viewed and not guess-estimated.
I suggest you do your research as above, and then have a professional view your order. Usually, if the order is not being followed accordingly, you cannot just automatically terminate you need to file a complaint to modify same.
Good luck and I hope this is a helpful start.

Re: what does accredited college mean
How old is this court order? Does it define "attending?" If there is no further elaboration, I can only assume that the intent was to make sure the child was not taking a handful of courses just to keep the child support coming. If the course load, however taken, is that of a full-time student, it would probably suffice for a judge.
