Legal Question in Family Law in Massachusetts
Break-up
Living with my fiance for 4 years and now breaking up. We own a home and boat together. He has two children who live with us on his days off and vacations and the rest of the time with their mother. I pay half of the mortgage, a boat payment & utilities, etc. I also carry an additional family dental plan which paid $1500 towards his daughters braces. I pay for most if not all of the groceries, personal use and household upkeep items. I also give the children money when needed, purchase items and gifts for them for occasions. Even though we were never married am I entitled to any compensation for monies I spend on the support of his children? I know half the house and boat are mine; both names are on the documents. Thank You

Re: Break-up
Unfortunately, the court is unlikely to assist you regarding funds paid toward your ex's children. However, if you need further assistance, please feel free to call.
Be aware that the only proper way to force the sale of the home and divide equity is a petition to partition. This equitable process can be more expensive, as the "commissioner" appointed to sell the property gets 10%, if my memory is correct. This is over and above a realtor's fee.
It may be a good idea to consider mediating this, and reducing it to a written agreement that can be enforced (if need be) in equity. I am available and experienced in this area.
However you decide to proceed, I wish you the best of luck.
