I am trying to save on atty fees, can I go directly to my ex-husbands place of employment to receive written documentation of his hours worked weekly?

You can go there, but they don't have to give the information to you. Indeed, one could argue that they cannot, without violating your ex's right to privacy. A subpoena is "due process," so the employer can't refuse.
