Legal Question in Family Law in Massachusetts

credit card usage

I was married for almost 3 & 1/2 years. My husband had already opened a credit card then signed me up to get one. He said I could use if for emergencies only. I went a little overboared & used it for gas, some shopping etc. Now we've separated because I found out he was seeing another female. I broke our lease & now living separately. the credit card bill went a little over $3000 & I was paying the montly statements when they came. Now that we've separated he wants me to pay back the $3000. I agreed verbally to pay little by little as I can. I paid $200 but haven't paid anything since for abt 10 months. What should I do?

If you have not started divorce proceedings, you should do so. In this process, your lawyer or court mediators can help negotiate an equitable property division. Debts truly yours may stay yours. Sexual misconduct does not determine the division of unrelated debts.

Debts incurred during the marriage, barring a prenuptial agreement that deals with such debts, are debts of the marriage.
