For how long are allimony payments paid out after a divorce
is there a way for someone who is paying allimony to have that amount stopped

Re: Divorce allimony
Awards of spousal support (alimony) are very fact-sensitive determinations made by a judge.
Spousal support payments, if required, can continue until the death of the spouse, and can also be modified by a judge at any time upon a "material change in circumstances" of the parties, inluding re-marriage of the payee spouse.
