How many years do you need to be married in Massachutts before you can ask for alimony?

THere is no set rule on alimony. However, there are expectations. Short marriages rarely generate an expectation of ongoing support, unless of course the other spouse was immensely rich. Longer marriages generate such an expectation. YOur exact circumstances must be explained to give a better answer.

Unfortunately, the answer to your question is left to the discretion of a judge, and there is no specific formula.

There are a number of factors the judge will consider when making a determination of spousal support, and only one of those factors is the length of the marriage. Other factors include whether there are children of the marriage, the earning capacity of the parties, the age of the parties, etc.
