Divorced Parents Paying For College
I have been divorced for over 10 years, am the custodial parent of an 18 year old & receive $500 a month child support. Our son is applying to colleges, now. His father & I are employed and have yearly salaries of about $50,000 each.I have remarried & am recording that household income on our college aid forms. My ex-husband doesn't want to pay for our son's college tuition. Is he legally bound to pay? If he doesn't, can I bring him to court to force him to do so? How do I get the necessary information about his finances, in order to complete the college forms? What's my recourse, please? Thank you kindly for your advice.

You can, but the court will want to know
(a) what student loans your son has applied for,
(b) how much he is being allowed to borrow,
(c) what your contribution will be, and
(d) what your current husband's income is (this affects the money you have available to pay for college because part of your living expenses are paid for by your current husband).
In other words, your current husband is YOUR Sugar Daddy.
Your ex-husband has NO Sugar Daddy.
Keep that in mind. Be fair and it will all work out.
You really should not bother waste money on the courts. They almost never settle these disputes amicably and might even make matters worse.
By the way, does your ex-husband see the boy??
Have you allowed him to see the boy?
Is that why he does not want to contribute to the costs of college?
Have you talked nicely to the boy about his father? Or have you trashed him? (I ask this, but I do congratulate you for calling the boy "OUR" son.)
There is always something that is not said which explains why a father does not want to contribute to the education of a son.
