i need to know if im divorced. my wife is not available to ask but she may have filed in absentia.shouldn't these be free records?

You would have to go to the Probate and Family Court to see if a divorce action was filed. To see the records, assuming she filed a divorce action would be free. Copies of documents will cost whatever the copy charges are at that court, usually 50 cents or a $1.00 per page. Certified copies are more.

However, to get a divorce your wife would have to serve you with the complaint, either with a sheriff by certified mail or in rare circumstances by publication. You should know if you were served with a complaint.
