Legal Question in Family Law in Massachusetts

domestic relations summons.

My daughter's father and I split recently and I had to file for state aide. When you do that they automaticlaly open a child support case. I told him that. He went and filed one anyway. I recently was served with papers and need to reply to his complaint.

My question is do I need to bring legal representation?

If you have a caseworker already with the DOR, bring the summons to the caseworker and ask if they'll go to court for you.

If they won't or if you don't have a caseworker with the DOR yet, then I would suggest getting representation.

You are allowed to represent yourself. However, you should let your DOR/CSE representative know about the date. He or she may seek to move the case to a block day. At the very least, it will help them keep an eye on the case.

If you would like a further consultation, I have an office in your area. You can also look at my sliding scale fee structure at my websitee.
