can i keep the engagement ring?

we became engaged in august it is now december, the ring cost between $2000.00 and $4000.00, do i have to return it if we break up?

we became engaged in ausust of this year.

The last time I researched this (probably 10 years ago) the law was as follows:

If the ring was solely an engagement ring, it was to be returned.

If it was also a gift for another occasion (e.g. Christmas, birthday), it need not be returned.

If you are considering breaking up, why would you keep a ring he is probably paying for on a credit card? Unless he owes YOU substantial funds, the classy, ethical, and moral thing to do is to return the ring, regardless of legal obligation.
