Re: family separation
See an attorney and file for custody. Turn custody order over to police.
: abandonment?
I agree and add that your attorney should get a private investigator. An interview will reach the details of the situation and will get down to what your options are.
I was wondering why you waited. Any how, time is important, and if you need assistance or have questions, contact me.

The prior answers ignore the fact that the police have refused to give you information on your wife's location. It is possible that your ex-wife is claiming that you are abusive, whether there is cause or not. Hiring a PI or taking other steps to locate her could be seen as stalking behavior. You need to tread carefully, and act only with advice of counsel.
I woulld suggest that you engage a lawyer, file the divorce, and seek notice by publication as the first step. A copy of the notice can also be sent to the police. This is the smart way for a man innocent of abuse -- opr guilty of abuse -- to proceed, because it creates a clear evidentiary path that you are acting lawfully.
It may sound time-consuming and expensive, but defending a criminal complaint of even misdemeanor stalking is more so.
