Legal Question in Family Law in Massachusetts

financial aide to colleges in a divorced family

I'm about to marry a divorced

man, who has a son who is about

to enter college. To receive the

maximum in financial aide from a

college, can we get married now

or is it better for us to wait for the

child to finish college; or can we

just file separate taxes. My

income is larger than this

gentlemen and his x-wife

combined and we are afraid my

income will affect the amount of

loans, scholarships or grants for

which this boy may qualify.

Re: financial aide to colleges in a divorced family

You should check with an accountant and FASFA about your questions. Both of them should be able to give you the financial ramifications of each. In fact I believe you can complete the FASFA form (with joint and individual income) online.

From a legal stand point the court will not include your income (when married) to determine what percentage your future husband will pay for college and child support.

A point in this equation is the income of this person's ex-wife. I agree that the numbers have to be run to see the effects of varius configurations to see what makes sense to you and your boyfriend.

But your focus misses the above matter.
