Legal Question in Family Law in Massachusetts

Financial separation?

My sister's husband has been racking up major gambling debts. She has confronted him numerous times and he swore that it would never happen again. However, in a effort to bail him out and save him from bookies, they took out a second mortgage on their house. She has been making positive steps to take care of their bills but he keeps getting new credit cards and maxing them out with illegal gambling. He obviously has a problem. Is there a way that she can separate herself financially from him, rather quickly, so that all of her positive efforts aren't for not? She is worried about losing everything and they have a young child to worry about. I would like to be able to provide advice but I don't know where to start.
