if you find out you have a 16 year old child you knew nothing about, are you responsible for 16 years of back child support.

First, paternity has to be established in the court. Then, when you are officially on record as the father, then yes, you may be obligated to pay child support dating back to the child's birth, but the court takes into account your ability to pay.
