Legal Question in Family Law in Massachusetts

Hand written document to drop dependent child's insurance

I handle our benefits and i received a 3 page letter - the 1st page was stamped ''received'' and dated 2/5/08 and the 2nd and 3rd pages were hand written by the paralegal from an attorney for a judement of modication to allow employee to drop his dependent child. I have no way of verifying this information nor will the law firm send a letter on their letterhead stating that their paralegal wrote this out. Do I have a right to ask this of him and/or should I just accept this as a legal document?

Re: Hand written document to drop dependent child's insurance

I would not accept this as a legal document. While we sometimes have handwritten documents in court, most judgments are typed by the court. A judgment must have a signature of a judge. It will also have a "caption" that identifies the court, the name of the case, and the docket number. If this information is missing, then I would assume that it is not a court judgment. If you are in doubt, you can try calling the court and ask them to confirm the order. Court dockets are computerized and the employees have the dockets at their fingertips.
