Legal Question in Family Law in Massachusetts

Can I still hire a lawyer when the trial is 1 month away? I originally retained a lawyer for $2,500. She had said, after I described the nature of the divorce, that the total cost should not go over this amount. My lawyer had another lawyer represent me at the temp. orders hearing and needless to say he did a horrible job, and I got my butt handed to me. The judge awarded the ex all our joint marital funds (she received it monthly until it was gone), and I pay $1300 per month in combined child/spousal support on an annual income of $40K. My ex's attorney is a free pro bono lawyer for low income. My lawyer then asked for an additional $2,000 to continue after the temp. orders hearing when she did minimal work and I was not happy with her representation. Since I had no access to our joint funds and paying through the nose in child support/alimony, I could no longer afford to pay her nor retain another lawyer and went pro se. My ex & her lawyer's pre trial demands are outragous, and now I feel as though I have no choice but to hire a lawyer, but I have minimal money. The trial is in a month, any advice??
