Legal Question in Family Law in Massachusetts

judgment of divorce nisi?

i got divorced on april 25 this year. my attorney emailed me a copy of judgment of divorce nisi. Is it the final document I need? Since the divorce will be finalized in 90 days, should i expect any other documents from court. Will I also get these documents in mail? What document do I need to get my name officially changed to my maiden name? Thank you.

Re: judgment of divorce nisi?

The Divorce Nisi is the final document from the court. Your divorce will automatically become effective 90 days after the date of the Divorce Nisi (assuming it was a contested divorce).

You can get your name changed using the Divorce Nisi if it was requested in the originally complaint. It should say on the document whether that was allowed by the court. If it was, you simply use that document as official proof to the RMV or the SS department, etc. If you never requested it, then you must get a name change approved from the probate court with a Petition for Name Change.

Since you had an attorney for your divorce, you should be asking him these and any other questions.
