Legal Question in Family Law in Massachusetts

I live in Mass. My mother lives in Puerto Rico, 59 years old and married, her husband has been taking care of her for the last 6 years due to a stroke. She has been told by doctors that she would be in much better shape if she was willing to do the work, but she is not. She was a neglectful, abusive parent and her husband is now wanting my sister and I to care for our mother. He is also 59 and having some health issues of his own. He is threatening us with legally making us become responsible for her.

Both, my sister and I have worked hard to raise above against all odds. We are grown adults with our own healthy families and it would be toxic for either one of us to be involve with the care of our mother. I read about the Filial law, which states that children my become finically responsible if a parent is unable to pay for their own care, I know is different from state to state. seeing that she is married and in Puerto Rico, I live in mass and my sister in Virginia and there is record, evidence and family who will testify in regards to the neglect, abandonment and abuse, does this law apply to us and if yes, how?

Thank you

It is a question of the Law in Puerto Rico and I am not sufficiently familiar with it to advise you. Under MA law, the husband would continue to be responsible for her until and unless he divorces her and then he still may be held responsible.

You need to contact an attorney in Puerto Rico.
