Legal Question in Family Law in Massachusetts

Living together

I have been living with my boyfriend for 2 years. I want to leave but he says to leave I owe him $10000.00 because he paid my credit cards. I did not ask him to pay my card. I have been paying the household bills, he was unemployed, and his car loans. Do I have to pay him??

Re: Living together

You do not have to pay him unless a court tells you that you must pay him. His payment of your credit card looks to me like a gift. Now that you are breaking up, he is, in essence, taking back the gift, which he can't do. I would not worry about it. You supported him. I assume his threat is an idle one.

Re: Living together

This is a touchy situation. He cannot stop you from leaving. Whether he owes you or you owe him is not going to be settled.

Given the amount of money, I would suggest that it is worth your while to consult an attorney and lay out this situation.

You are welcome to contact my office.
