Legal Question in Family Law in Massachusetts

I was married 2 years ago in Senegal, I am a US citizen. Since then our relationship has failed. My wife in Senegal has vacated the marriage, I do not believe she has gotten a divorce though she said she was going for one. It has been a while and Ive been unable to contact her as her phone is now off, I dont know her current address and she wont return emails. I have started another relationship and wish to know how I can be free to remarry. Can you give any advice?

If you were validly divorced in Senegal, then your divorce would be honored here in Massachusetts. You need to speak to the court in Senegal, or consult with an attorney in Senegal to determine whether your marriage was terminated. If you would like some assistance in this, please feel free to contact my office.

If you were not divorced in Senegal you can get divorced in Massachusetts. The Court can grant a divorce in the state where you reside. However, the court can't make orders relating to property located outside of Massachusetts or alimony unless your wife participates in the divorce.
