Legal Question in Family Law in Massachusetts

Privacy

My ex-husband sent me a letter stating ''be advised that your social security # has been given to a friend at the IRS and he is going to check your tax return information for me.'' Is that legal? In this day of identity theft, can he be giving my social security # out?

Re: Privacy

Absolutely not.

1. Your husband can file notice with the IRS if there is a basis to believe that you filed wrong or fraudulent tax returns.

2. YOur husband cannot ask a friend to investigate. This violates the IRS rules. His friend could be fired.

3. THis is not identity theft, but it could be an invasion of privacy.

You could contact the IRS and advise them of this. You can also contact me.
