Legal Question in Family Law in Massachusetts

I am professionally involved with a mother whos child was removed by protective services for suspected physical abuse. After taking her infant to childrens hospital for concerns of swelling on various parts of his body she was told that her child was the victim of physical abuse and had "multiple broken bones in various stages of healing". The child was taken into custody and the mom was given a public defense lawyer who appears to be working for the department rather than the family. Since the childs removal many medical tests have been done, one revealing a severe vitamin D defficency. I was certain that on the next court date the child would be transitioned back home. Unfortunately, her lawyer did not show up for the scheduled court date and another date was given for next month. As a professional in the child welfare field and a mother, I can say with 100% certainty this is a wonderful mother who did nothing wrong. Unfortunately, she cannot afford a private attorney. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
