Legal Question in Family Law in Massachusetts

reschedule of a final court trial

During our pretrial court meeting for divorce in April 08, the court set up a 2-days final court trial in late June. Today I got message from my ex-to-be's lawyer, saying that the court date might be ''continued'' and asked me to prepare for a postpone. My questions are: 1) in what situation will a court reschedule a final trial? 2) how can I find out whether the reschedule is from the court or a game played by the other party? 3) will the court simply reschedule based on the other party's request? 4)what can I do to prevent the other party from playing a game to delay the case?

(Note: The reality is that I want to have the divorce case be closed ASAP, while the other party may want to delay the process.

Re: reschedule of a final court trial

The Court will probably not willingly continue the trial just because the other lawyer asks. he or she will need a good reason -- conflict with a prior order, family illness, that sort of thing.

However, Mr. Murray is right on point: if you don't have a lawyer, now is the "last minute." You should not attempt to try a case without assistance. Toime to find a lawyer with some experience who can and will help.
