When my dad died he put me and my sisters name on the house (that was 16yrs ago)..but recently our mother wanted her name added to the deed, which we did legally(last year) and now my sister and Mom are forcing me off our property by buying me out!! What can I do? I have lived here for the most part of my life and worked on this house with my Dad when he was alive etc..I dont want to move! i help pay the mortgage and property taxes etc.....can you offer any advice? Thanks.

Dear Co-Owner: I'm sorry to hear about your current situation.

One thing you should know is that your family cannot force you out of the property, or force you to accept a buy-out of the property if you do not want one.

That being said, they do have the right to commence a partition action in court, and ask that the court force the sale of the home. You should really speak with a lawyer and discuss your options.

Please feel free to give my office a call if you would like to schedule a consultation or speak in greater detail about your situation. 617-357-4898.
