Legal Question in Family Law in Massachusetts

Can a sixteen year old move out....

I am at the age of sixteen. My parents and I do not get along at all. I want to leave there home but I am not sure if I am even able to. Can I, at the age of sixteen, move out and be on my own? If not, can I move into a family members home?

Re: Can a sixteen year old move out....

You should be aware that Department of Social Services has jurisdiction over you until your 17th birthday. THus, you can seek its assistance -- or your parents can, as well. THe Juvenile Court can assist both parties if things are that bad.

However, "not getting along" is vague at best. You should seek counseling if that process has not been attempted. You should also seek a less confrontational way to approach your parents, with the aid of a "neutral" (e.g., school counselor).

You need to realize that your short-term may seem unbearable, but that your parents will probably love and support you in years to come. If there is a way to preserve the long-term relationship, you should do so -- even if moving in with a relative is necessary in the short term.

If "not getting along" is code for some sort of real and serious abuse (not merely a curfew or rules about taking out the garbage, mind you), you should seek help from the local police immediately.
