Legal Question in Family Law in Massachusetts
summons for divorce
my husband had me served with a divorce summons. I cannot afford an attorney and need to answer the complaint. Is there a specific format I need to follow to answer the complaint? I was told by the town clerks office I could write my answer using a word document, but I don't know what to include.

The format is simply admitting what is true and denying what is false. You may then ask for additional relief.
You should obtain an attorney's aid. Please note that not all attorneys charge impossible rates. Many lawyers, including me, consider the client's income in setting an hourly rate.

Just answer it by each paragraph, and if it is true say so, otherwise deny it; but you have a right to defenses, and counterclaims.
Re: summons for divorce
You really should retain an attorney who could also file a motion requesting the court require your husband to provide you with an allowance toward the cost of your attorney's fees to defend yourself in the divorce if appropriate.
Good Luck!
