Visitation after 12 years

My son is 12 years old, and has not ever met his father, well that he can remember. His dad came around a little bit when my son was a couple months old. My son's father kept my son a secret from his family until a year ago, now he pays child support, he does not want to see him right now since it's ruining his marriage. Can I ask for counseling if he decides he wants to see my son. I am worried about how he will act, afraid he may treat him different out of spite for me. He did not fight me on full legal custody, so I have that. What can I do to make things easier for my son.

An absence of 12 years from a child's life is huge. One wonders about the motive.

This is both a moral and legal problem. This is also a huge emotional problem for the child. At a minimum, the court and/or you should seek to appoint an investigator to discuss this with the father and make recommendations. As part of the process, you can ask for discovery to find out what has been going on, and to help you now with your decisions.
