Legal Question in Family Law in Massachusetts

Will a restraining order against me damage my record or reputation?

My ex-girlfriend filed a restraining order against me. I do not mind having no contact with her (I have had none in 6 months and very little in 3 years), but I wonder whether the order will damage my reputation or record?

Also, do I need to go to the hearing? If so, what would my goal be?

Re: Will a restraining order against me damage my record or reputation?

It will not damage your reputation unless it somehow becomes public.

It will be a part of your court record, and if you have a problem with anger so that you might find yourself facing another complaint for assault or battery or threatening, you will be deemed a problem.

If she had no grounds for the restraining order (reasonably in fear for her life or safety due to your actions), you should have appeared at the hearing and challenged it. If that date has gone by, it is more difficult to get the order lifted.

If you don't lose your temper and try to or hurt people, it probably will not have any effect.
