Legal Question in Medical Leave in Massachusetts
Mother with mental health and physical problem
My mother reciently went out of work due to a mental health issue, stress and anxiety, and she is unable to drive at all, she gets too stressed out even thinking about driving to the store. She is also in physical therapy for her neck and shoulders, chronic pain and unable to hold a phone or work on a computer for more than a few minutes a day. I have 9 weeks of sick time, can I use FMLA to take a couple of days off a week to drive her to appointments? Right now I work full time (Thursday thru Monday)and have a family of my own, so running around on my 2 weekdays off (Tuesday and Wednesday) for her many appointments and errands is taking a toll on my health and stress levels. My mother is currently under the care of her primary care, a phsychologist and a orthopedic specialist.

Re: Mother with mental health and physical problem
Depending on whether you qualify for FMLA leave and whether your employer is covered by the FMLA, the time necessary to take your mother to doctor's appointments, etc. should be covered by the FMLA. For more information, you should visit www.dol.gov and follow the links to the FMLA portal. It contains a lot of helpful information. If you still have questions, you should contact a local attorney who handles FMLA cases and seek his or her opinion.
