Filing can be done by simply mailing it to the Clerk's office, however, your friend cannot represent you without having been admitted to the Bar.

Filing a complaint needs to be done with care, and must meet the rules, and the cost of filing, including the cost of service.

As Ray said, you can file from anywhere, assuming the court has jurisdiction over the matter, and the venue is correct.

As the other posters have said, anyone can file a complaint in Massachusetts, with or without an attorney.

However, as with any legal action, there are strict rules as to which state is the appropriate forum for certain types of actions. Even if Massachusetts has jurisdiction over your case, Massachusetts must also have jurisdiction over the defendant. These are complicated legal issues that really require the training and expertise of an attorney.

Furthermore, while you are able to file a lawsuit in Massachusetts, the practical aspects of showing up for hearings, arguing motions, etc., really means that you need to travel to Massachusetts frequently or hire an attorney licensed in this state.
