Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Massachusetts

Contempt Charge

While contacting the court to find out about the schedule or a pretrial conference I found out that I am being charged with contempt for not paying someone in full as ordered by the court. (I did but thats not the point) Question, Do I have to receive some sort of notice from the court or from the other party telling me I have a court date? I assume that if I dont receive notice (these are not serviceable notices.. right?) and dont appear then I'll automatically be in contempt. The other party must show some proof that I was notified, yes?

Re: Contempt Charge??

You should have received notice from the person or business that filed the action, and other notices from the court.

I suggest that you check the court file for all documents. Check to see if they listed your address correctly, and if you were properly served with the initial complaint.

Check to see if any of the mail sent has been returned.
