Deffamation of character?

My boyfriend and I live in Mass. and are having problems with his mother. She is threatening to tell everybody she knows that my boyfriend is a level one sex offender from an incident 14 years ago when he was a juvenile. I believe those records are supposed to be closed, so could we sue her for deffamation if she does this? Also, he recently was arrested for not registering this past year, but he was told he only had to register for 10 years. Nobody can seem to answer this question, how long does he have to register in this state?
